The Consulting Business Blueprint

To create a successful educational consulting business, your business will need to progress through specific stages as it grows. That’s what our Consulting Business Blueprint is all about.

Having a proven model for what to do and when to do it is crucial for eliminating wasted time and getting you to increased profitability faster.

The Four Stages of Business Growth:

Stage 1
Positioning

This foundational stage is where you identify and define your Ideal Customer Avatar, identify the problems they have that you can solve and the language they use to describe those problems, research the competitive landscape in your niche, design your Irresistible Offer(s), create your Magical Marketing Message, and build out your niche website that establishes you as an authority in your field. Laying the groundwork in stage one sets you up for success going forward.

Stage 2
Marketing

Once you have your Irresistible Offer and messaging created, it’s time to drive traffic to your website and turn that traffic into an in-house email list. Crucial elements to establish at this stage include a systematic lead generation process, a lead magnet to offer value to your leads and turn them into opt-ins, and a content marketing strategy to build a relationship with them and (periodically) to pitch them your offer(s). By establishing your marketing message and establishing your list building strategies in stage two, you’ll substantially increase the number of clients you attract.

Stage 3
Scaling

Once you get stages 1 and 2 running smoothly, you’ll eventually reach a point where you have more business than you can handle of the high-touch, low-volume variety (speaking, consulting, coaching). Your time will be maxed out and your business will plateau—unless you move into stage three, that is. At this stage, for your business to continue to grow, you’ll have to create one or more products (think ebooks, books, online courses, group coaching programs, etc.) that, while low touch, can be scaled to high volume to vastly increase your business’s profit potential. At this stage, if you haven’t done so already, you’ll also likely need to add help in the form of employees or outsource more work to freelancers.

Stage 4
Expand or
Exit

If you’ve done well in stages one through three, you’ll have a mature, highly-profitable consulting business model in place. At this point, you can choose to continue to milk the profits of your current model—many highly successful consultants are content to do so. Or, if you want to max out the potential of your business, there are two routes you can take. You can (1) choose to further scale by including more people (for example, through a train-the-trainer model) and/or by adding more product offerings, or (2) you can pursue an exit strategy and position the business to sell to a buyer for a big payday. If this is your ultimate goal, it’s definitely doable.

That’s the gist of Ed Consultant Marketing’s Consulting Business Blueprint. There’s a great deal of fine detail and intermediate steps within each stage, of course, but this gives you the big picture.

Our 1-to-1 Business Coaching Process

STEP
1

Discovery Call:

You reach out to us and schedule a free discovery call. We’ll ask a few questions to find out your current situation and what you’d like to achieve in your business. If we’re a good fit for each other, we’ll talk next steps. If we’re not, no worries. We’ll do our best to point you in a direction that will be beneficial for you. Important: We only work with a small number of 1-to-1 Coaching clients at a time, so we’re highly selective.

STEP
2

Onboarding, Values and Vision Call:

If we’re a fit and you sign up for our coaching services, we’ll get you onboarded and schedule your first coaching call—what we call a Values and Vision call. The purpose of this call is for us to get a clear picture of your values and the big picture vision you have for your business, including revenue goals and the impact you want to make in the world.

3

Strategy Call:

With the big picture established, it’s time to talk strategy. In other words, how are we going to get you from Point A (where you are currently in your business) to Point B (where you’ve achieved your dream business)? This is a nitty-gritty discussion that identifies, out of all the possible pathways for achieving your goals, which ones are the best fit for your personality, skill set, and timeframe.

4

Goals and Objectives:

Between our Strategy Call and your first regular coaching call, we bring our experience to bear and do the hard work of creating a detailed, step-by-step plan for your business growth. We create this personalized plan in a Google doc that acts as a living and growing document throughout our time working together. With this plan in hand, you’ll always know exactly where you are in the growth process and what needs to be done next.

STEP
5

Ongoing Work:

Once we’ve delivered your personalized business growth plan, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We’ll schedule regular check-in calls (generally about three times a month, though they can be more frequent, if needed). We’ll discuss your progress and assign you your homework (yes, you do have homework; no, there’s no written exam) to be completed before our next call. When you achieve one objective, we move on to the next one. That’s all there is to it!

STEP
6

Reflect and Reenroll:

As we approach the end of our contracted coaching period (we contract in 6-month stretches), we’ll have a Reflection Call where we look back at the progress you’ve made and what still needs to be achieved in your business. If it would be beneficial for you to continue working with us, we’ll get you reenrolled and rock on without missing a beat.
